Review

Let’s Dance celebrates dance halls and summer dance pavilions, the
young and exuberant audiences who frequented them, and the musical
greats (Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald,
Guy Lombardo, Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, etc.) who performed in them.
Peter Young has captured the spirit of that time in a meticulously
researched book that interweaves personal histories and memorabilia.

The material is organized by region, beginning with Toronto and
concluding with Northern Ontario. The experiences of the musicians,
owners, and dancers chronicled in these pages span almost a full
century. Young documents evolving musical and dance styles, relates the
stories of the physical buildings, and fills his book with personal
reminiscences (“I can’t remember what bands played there, but I do
remember there were always lots of girls”). Let’s Dance is a
must-have for anyone interested in music and dance, as well as cultural
history.
