Review

The camera remains one of humankind’s greatest inventions, as this
splendid book attests. In skilful hands, the camera portrays in a way
that a thousand words cannot the majesty and the details of a Canada
remote and still little known. The Yukon, its human and natural history
as old as the rest of the Americas, was born of gold in the modern
consciousness. Theo Allofs, who follows the tracks of the prospectors of
yesteryear, reveals a new gold—the mysterious charm and solitude of
Canada’s northwest corner. The Yukon is a unique sector of the
Canadian north and deserves to be recognized as such. This book with its
many fine photographs and engaging commentary goes a long way toward
conveying the specialness of this territory and its peoples.
