Review

More than 60 percent of Canadians die each year without a will, so
estate planning is essential. Douglas Gray, a former estate lawyer, and
John Budd, a chartered accountant, are top experts in their fields. Both
have penned many books and articles and participated in a variety of
public forums on personal finance.

This second edition of the bestselling guide starts with the chapter
“What Is Estate Planning?” and ends with “Planning Your
Funeral.” Each chapter is organized under several subheadings;
features short real-life examples that illustrate the nuances of
individual cases; and concludes with a page or two of answers to
frequently asked questions. Four appendixes provide further information,
lists, charts, and document samples. Topics include living wills, health
and disability insurance, powers of attorney, trusts, funeral planning,
and retirement planning.

The guide is promoted as essential reading for all people, and I would
have to agree with that assessment. Basic financial planning, with a
view to managing one’s estate regardless of income bracket, should be
a top priority for everyone. This comprehensive and very readable guide
is highly recommended.
