Review
Stolen is the sequel to Armstrong’s first novel, Bitten, featuring
werewolf Elena Michaels. In Stolen, money competes with magic, as a
crazed billionaire and his scientist lackeys begin to round up
supernaturals with the aim of exploiting their powers. Elena herself is
captured and forced into some unlikely alliances in order to escape,
although it’s not clear who is working for which side.
By playing with stereotypes of supernatural beings, Armstrong
refreshingly avoids a Disneyesque version of good versus bad magic. Her
supernaturals are just as flawed, confused, and varied as mere mortals.
Everyone has his or her own agenda, a circumstance that makes the action
deliciously unpredictable.
Though it might be advisable to read Bitten first, Stolen does work as
a stand-alone novel. It’s an engaging, (sometimes) humorous, and
thought-provoking read for anyone interested in vampires, werewolves, or
other supernatural beings.
