Review

This fascinating collection of ghost stories from British Columbia draws
on interviews with witnesses who have seen or experienced ghosts and
related paranormal activity, as well as reports in local newspapers of
strange events. The stories, mainly of hauntings and poltergeists during
the past century, centre on mansions and institutions, but there are
also a few tales about ghosts in stranger places, such as a park, a burn
unit, and even a golf course. Belyk suggests that his true tales may not
be as satisfying as fictional stories, which build tension and lead to
strange resolutions, but this is not true. His well-written and
well-researched stories are interesting and disturbing in their own
right. Whether he’s writing about the famous ghosts in Dunsmuir
Mansion in Victoria, B.C., or the lesser-known poltergeist that
disturbed the Duryba family, he’s a fine storyteller.
