Review
“[N]othing compares to the sheer spectacle and excitement of being
behind the scenes of 007,” writes David Giammarco, who has covered the
entertainment industry for more than 15 years. In his first chapter,
“The Man with the Golden Pen,” he profiles the prolific creator of
the James Bond books, Ian Fleming, who set out to “write the spy novel
to end all spy novels.” He goes on to provide behind-the-scenes
details of the more than 20 films that were produced over the 40-year
life span of the fictional Bond, with a focus on lead actors Sean
Connery (1962–71), George Lazenby (1969), Roger Moore (1973–85),
Timothy Dalton (1987–89), and Pierce Brosnan (1995–2002).
Individual chapters are devoted to Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The
World Is Not Enough, and Die Another Day. The book is chock-full of
black-and-white and color photos. A foreword by E. Howard Hunt of C.I.A.
fame sets the record straight by distinguishing between the reality of
professional undercover intelligence work and James Bond’s hyped-up
world of make-believe and special effects. Written in a punchy style
that reflects the action-packed movies it deals with, For Your Eyes Only
is a must-read for Bond aficionados.
