Review

Vancouver writer Teresa McWhirter’s gritty, debut novel follows the
intertwined lives of urban twentysomethings searching for friendship,
love, and a never-ending party. The characters—Carrotgirl, Blue, Em,
Jezebel, Hannah, and others—live in a decidedly un-idyllic Victoria.
Their days consist of hangovers, drug scores, and house parties; failed
relationships are the norm. Feelings of remorse and even responsibility
periodically surface, only to be washed down by cheap draft at local
pubs like the Dirty Dollar.

McWhirter’s characters are made realistic by an edgy, street-smart
dialogue that comes straight from experience. (Their individual fates
are revealed in a touching epilogue.) Punctuated with caustic humor,
this hard-hitting novel is about the people who have been there and done
that, and lived to tell their stories.
