Review

This true story of a terrifying shipwreck and a remarkable survival is
told by a master mariner whose knowledge of ships and sensitivity to the
harshness of the sea add their own notes of authenticity. The events
described took place in the spring of 1877 off Cape Sable Island at the
southern tip of Nova Scotia. The bare bones of the tale are strange and
terrible and the author tells it with a fine mixture of creative
imagination and respect for the essential facts. His narrative also
clarifies for the general reader the behavior of sailing ships and the
handling of small boats under stormy conditions off Nova Scotia’s
rugged, heavily indented, rock-bound southeast coast. Anyone with a love
of the sea and of a well-told tale will appreciate this excellent
example of popular historical writing devoted to Nova Scotia’s
maritime heritage.
