Review
J. Eugene Horvath has spent a lifetime collecting and documenting the
many works that focus on “historical Hungary.” With this two-volume
set, he has created an annotated and detailed bibliography of Hungarian
books, maps, and city views covering the years 1493–1819.
Volume 1 provides a catalogue of books on the topic, arranged
chronologically with detailed bibliographic and physical descriptions
provided for each item. Reproductions of title pages and illustrations
from the books are also included. The author’s own notes provide
biographical and other relevant information for each work. Horvath also
traces the provenance of each book, listing previous owners and book
auction or sales information. Each entry in the bibliography contains
citations to reference works that provide additional information about
the author, publisher, engraver, illustrator, or printer. A full list of
reference works is provided at the end of the book, together with a
classified index and a historical name index.
Volume 2, devoted to maps and city views, is organized in the same
manner as Volume 1. Complete descriptive cartographic information is
provided for each map, and there are illustrations of the maps. If the
maps are included in a book, the citation for that book is given. This
two-volume bibliography will be of use to anyone with an interest in
historical works on Hungary.
