Review

Part of McGraw Hill Ryerson’s Solutions for Canadians series, Make
Sure It’s Deductible is a practical, easy-to-read guide for
entrepreneurs who operate SOHO (small office, home office) businesses.
The author, who has written several personal finance and tax preparation
books, operates the Jacks Institute, which claims to be Canada’s
leading trainer of tax industry professionals.

In 12 chapters, the book examines effective taxation strategies for
small business. The differences, as well as the interconnections,
between business and individual taxation are emphasized. “Real Life”
sections give examples of taxation problems or opportunities, identify
the complications involved, and state the solution. Numerous forms,
schedules, and worksheets are illustrated to aid the entrepreneur. A
“Recap” section at the end of each chapter summarizes the taxation
tips provided.

Readers should be cautioned that the book, like its competitors, has a
limited life; taxation rates, rules, and laws are constantly changing,
and some tips may be out of date already.
