Review
Although this book bills itself as a survival guide for those obliged to
venture before parliamentary committees, it offers advice that should
prove valuable to those preparing to appear before any type of
committee, whether in the public sector or the private sector.
Students of Canadian government who want a better understanding of the
roles and operations of various types of parliamentary committees will
find particularly useful the chapters titled “The Parliamentary
Backdrop” (knowing the context), “Committees 101” (knowing
committees), and “The Committee Dynamic” (knowing the process). In
his concluding (and perhaps most interesting) chapter, the author
considers the future of parliamentary committees and witnesses. In the
preceding chapters, readers are presented with invaluable checklists and
pointers on things to do before, during, and after an appearance before
a parliamentary committee. Those looking for information on this subject
are unlikely to find any better source than McInnes’s engaging book.
