Review

A young woman from Quebec spends time in Paris. A writer who is trying
to find a publisher for her book, she is also an illegal visitor. Though
constantly afraid that the police will demand to see her visa, she is
determined to see everything in the city. This novel consists of entries
from her journal. As with most personal diaries, the entries are
abbreviated and there is no background information about the people the
woman meets or the places she visits (readers familiar with Paris can
fill in the blanks with their own recollections of the city).

The woman’s description of a visit to Versailles is more evocative
than most—“Between geometric gardens. Emanating from shimmering
palatial centre. Proclaiming fresh varieties of flowers. Formerly
popping up each morning”—but the unconventional sentence structure
does not make for easy reading.
