Review

Allan Levine is a writer, historian, and educator whose nonfiction books
include the award-winning Fugitives of the Forest (1998). Sins of the
Suffragette, his second historical fiction murder mystery, is set in
Winnipeg’s immigrant neighborhoods, rich and poor. A voice whispering
“Why do you hurt me so?” provides the only clue to the stabbing
murders of suffragette Emily Powers and her lover Antonio. As the clever
and hard-nosed detective Sam Klein investigates the murders, Levine
takes the reader on a colorful tour through the “Dominion’s
wickedest city,” with its brothels, Chinese drug lords, and overworked
police force. His account of Winnipeg’s early settlement is
brilliantly woven into a tale of nail-biting suspense that educates as
much as it entertains.
