Review

A Man and a Dog is the simple story of a homeless man befriended by a
mysterious talking dog that offers him companionship, consolation, and
counseling as he moves from place to place. When the man dies, the dog
lies with him and protects his body until help arrives.

Acceptance of oneself and others is the central message of this
evocative, crisply written novella. Dedicated to “the homeless and
those who believe in them,” A Man and a Dog is one of those books that
demands to be read at a single sitting, and then reread for an
appreciation of its depths. Hewitt, the author of two previous works of
fiction, is a writer to watch.
