Review

Joanna Gosse is a singer, dancer, and actress best known for her many
performances on stage, radio, and television. As Liar, her first novel
opens, a Toronto sculptor named China meets Sam Eagle, an aboriginal
lawyer from Grimshaw Island. It’s love—and lust—at first sight.
They get married and set up house on the island.

The trouble starts when China finds out that her new husband is a
chronic liar. She is even more upset when she discovers that Sam has
been reading her journals behind her back. In the end, she goes back to
her friends and relatives in Toronto, taking all her journals with her.
A mysterious death later sends her back to Grimshaw Island where she
performs an unusual ritual. This intriguing story offers plenty of sex
talk and feminine poetry, as well as tidbits of psychology, aboriginal
wisdom and traditions, and reincarnation theory.
