Review

This novel was originally published in France in 1960, and has been
reissued several times under different titles in France, the United
States, and Canada.

It is the story of Richard, a 14-year-old motherless English boy who is
expelled from boarding school for masturbating in public. On the advice
of his mistress, his father hires a governess who uses “firmness” to
break Richard of what his father terms “this filthy habit.” In
engaging Harriet Marwood he gets what he asked for; over the course of
several years she employs humiliation, whipping, flogging, and bondage
to achieve her objective.

The whole story revolves round Richard’s increasing submission to
Harriet’s domination, and the sexual relationship between his father
and mistress. The English Governess will appeal to readers who enjoy
explicit descriptions of sexual acts.
