Review

The assumption that women will be interested in hockey only if their
male companions are fans is insulting to say the least. Spencer herself
debunks this premise with her final chapter on the amazing growth of
women’s hockey. In earlier chapters, she covers the history of the
game and of the Stanley Cup; discusses the rules (diagrams would have
been helpful in this section), jargon, rituals, and superstitions;
reviews the structure of professional hockey; and provides descriptions
of each NHL team. One chapter is devoted to goaltenders and another to
all-time hockey heroes.

If you can put up with the sexist premise, The Girlfriend’s Guide to
Hockey is a good introduction to the game.
