Review

Brody, who is affiliated with the Scott Polar Research Institute, and
Nicklen, a northerner, have collaborated to produce “a celebration”
of that the Arctic. An introduction provides an overview of this huge,
rugged, and splendid habitat, describing its weather (within which the
Inuit recognize six seasons), geology, and plants and animals. The
stunning photographs depict subjects ranging from the powerful
Wilberforce Falls to an endearing walrus pup; the lavish layout helps to
convey the vast landscapes. The focus is entirely nonhuman, without
igloos or abandoned DEW-line stations. In his preface, Nicklen stresses
that none of his photographs were taken at game farms; his prowess in
the wild is remarkable (but he does not list his equipment). This book
is highly recommended for everyone interested in the Arctic or beauty.
