Review

The Kander and Ebb musical Cabaret premiered on November 20, 1966, at
the Broadhurst Theatre in New York. In this book, Keith Garebian
provides an in-depth look at that original production, focusing
attention on the musical’s director, Harold Prince; the stories and
play on which Cabaret is based; Cabaret’s place in American musical
theatre; and, above all, the history of the original production. That
history is a fascinating one, and Garebian recounts it with enthusiasm
and intelligence. Neither a casual read nor an academic treatise, The
Making of Cabaret will appeal to musical theatre historians and lovers
of Broadway musicals.
