Review
A product of the Depression years, president of Power Corporation at 29,
an undersecretary at the United Nations at 40, and chairman of Ontario
Hydro, oil company executive-turned-environmentalist Maurice Strong
served as chief organizer of the 1991 UN Rio Summit on the Future of the
Planet; more recently, he has advocated for UN reform. Where on Earth
Are We Going? is Strong’s attempt to counter the accusation that he is
the head of a movement whose ambitions include world government.
In the autobiography, Strong comes across as a well-meaning individual
who strongly supports the efforts of nongovernmental and civil society
organizations. A follower of the liberal internationalism promoted by
Lester Pearson and Pierre Trudeau, Strong has long believed that
politics, economics, cultural identity, and the environment are
inextricably linked. His controversial book will appeal to anyone with
an interest in international affairs and the means by which political
power is achieved.
