Review

This collection of 30 articles (shorter versions of which have appeared
in various Canadian magazines and newspapers) was inspired by the
author’s kayak travels along the B.C. coast. The articles, which are
distributed among five sections (people, villages, flora/Fauna, boats,
islands) evoke the ruggedness of the landscape, the struggles of the
aboriginal and pioneer forebears, and the character of the people who
live on its shores today.

Scott’s book, which includes a generous selection of color and
black-and-white photographs, is full of valuable insights into the
cultural and physical aspects of this remarkable landscape. Greater
attention to the author’s own experiences would have given the book
more depth and provided a break from the relation of facts and
itineraries, a natural consequence of Scott’s “reportage” style of
writing. Secret Coastline is a gem of a book nonetheless. Highly
recommended for anyone with an interest in the B.C. coastal landscape.
