Review
Among the Lions is the second volume of Horwood’s memoirs. The first,
A Walk in the Dreamtime (1997), revealed seminal influences on his
literary career: his youth, upbringing (much of which he claims to have
rebelled against), and Newfoundland environment. In this volume, Horwood
concentrates on his writing career; his life at Beachy Cove, which led
to his award-winning nature tale, The Foxes of Beachy Cove (1967), and
the less-popular Remembering Summer (1997); his friendship with Farley
Mowat and acquaintance with such writers as Margaret Laurence and
Margaret Atwood; his involvement with the Writers’ Union of Canada and
the Public Lending Right Commission. Among the Lions introduces readers
to a writer who deserves recognition for bringing Newfoundland out of
the literary doldrums.
