Review

Essentially a compendium of common sense, this manual for homeowners
covers a broad range of issues associated with buying, owning, and
selling a home, such as affordability and location (key to buying a
home); evaluating the houses you see, shopping for a mortgage; making an
offer to purchase; signing contracts with renovators, movers, and
others; obtaining homeowners insurance; moving to your new home; and
dealing with repairs, home security, and noisy neighbors. This updated
second edition also includes useful checklists and forms as well as a
section on how to look for a home on the Internet.

The authors, both lawyers, have written several books, including Make
It Legal: What Every Canadian Entrepreneur Needs to Know About the Law
(1998) and Facing a Death in the Family (1999). Buying, Owning and
Selling a Home in Canada is good-humored, well organized, and
accessible. It’s unfortunate that the special terms used throughout
the text are not consolidated in a glossary.
