Review

This book may have an austere format (there are, for example, no
illustrations), but it contains a wealth of information for language
teachers. The author seamlessly weaves together the basics of teaching
methodology, more recent theories and ideas, and checklists and
strategies for applying them in the classroom. He also discusses the
relationship between reading and writing, reminds us of the magic of
poetry, and offers tips on making connections between literary events
and the real world of the adolescent. With this book in hand, a language
teacher can develop a comprehensive reading and writing program that
will meet curriculum demands and at the same time thoroughly engage
students in Grades 4 through 8.
