Review

Bullying in the school context is a growing concern. In Canada, there
have been several cases of bullying that have resulted in death or
permanent physical or mental injury for the victim.

The Anti-Bullying Handbook provides an overview of the current research
on bullying, describes preventative strategies that teachers can use,
and examines various models of intervention. The book addresses the
problem of bullying as it exists in New Zealand. This is of minor
concern for Canadian readers since the information is based on similar
populations with parallel cultural values. More problematic is the dry
writing and sometimes confusing presentation, with illustrations often
serving to disrupt the text rather than support its message. Also
unfortunate is the author’s failure to discuss a positive
anti-bullying program known as Character Development, which emphasizes
the creation of a positive school climate in which respect and tolerance
are rewarded.

Overall, Sullivan provides a useful—but not essential—manual for
school personnel addressing the problem of bullying.
