Review

There are many individuals who escape on long “walkabouts” to
realize their destiny. Kevin Patterson, a Canadian doctor who struck out
on a voyage of self-discovery, is one such individual. The Water In
Between is the journal of a talented yet disillusioned young man who
gained personal fulfilment through his contemplations and experiences in
the South Pacific. In much the same way as a good comedian can make us
laugh through cheeky observations on the human condition, Patterson
strikes a universal chord with thoughts that are by turns unique and
commonplace.

“Languor is underrated. It is not possible to be immobile in modern
urban society except by dint of constant effort ... hours and hours
spent staring at the sky and remembering books and birthdays and great
kisses: this is a pure pleasure that eludes the productive in all their
confident superiority.” Patterson’s book offers not only glimpses
into the inner workings of a rare young man, but also a strong narrative
of a journey that is both entertaining and absorbing.
