Review

This engaging memoir focuses on the life of adventure the author and his
wife pursued as they traveled the world to teach. Their journey (one
often marked by political upheaval) started in Ethiopia and Sudan, when
they arrived in Africa in October 1949. They then tackled the small
village of Kincolith on the northwest coast of British Columbia, where
they stayed a year. Sarawak, in East Malaysia, engaged their interest
and energies for many years, as they helped to set up a teacher’s
college.

Mullen’s prose is straightforward and spare, and he is candid about
his own weaknesses and human frailties. He does not have an insightful
lesson to teach us, but his engaging memoir is full of interesting
tidbits about the life of adventure he has led.
