Review
Moral Selfhood in the Liberal Tradition brings the reader face to face
with the postmodern debate over the future of classical liberalism. In
particular, it looks at the argument surrounding “self” and the
rationality of liberalism. The author argues the necessity of rethinking
the foundations of liberalism. “A refashioned liberalism,” he
suggests, “must find the resources with which to counter the reigning
paradigm of instrumentality.”
Paul Fairfield presents a well-argued and well-articulated thesis. One
suspects that his thoroughly researched book, which is supplemented by
an extensive bibliography, will spark a number of debates in the senior
common room.
