Review

This unique collection of dark fantasy does not rely on the old standby
villains like vampires and werewolves. Instead, it assails us with
stranger horrors. Each story plays on a human frailty or vice and by the
end of each tale, revenge or victory has been achieved through unusual
means.

Lovers of the untouched beauty of the north who fight against the
wanton destruction of nature will enjoy “A Voice in the Wild” by
Hugh B. Cave. Certain stories—such as “The Rat, Peering Out, Sees
Justice Done” by Vincent Grant Perkins and “Oyster Love” by Susan
MacGregor—tell of revenge wreaked on unwitting victims through rather
gruesome methods. “Time Flies” by Gregory Ward appears to be a
simple descriptive story, until the end; the realization of what is
actually taking place is quite amazing.

In keeping with Don Hutchison’s first four volumes of Northern
Frights, these stories by skilled writers of the dark fiction genre will
appeal to anyone who delights in stories with a twist. This volume,
however, is not suitable for the squeamish.
