Review

Born in Newfoundland, Ralph Osborne is a jack-of-all-trades, having
spent time teaching synchronized swimming, selling real estate and
snowmobiles, working as a stonecutter and janitor, directing a
street-outreach organization, managing Rochdale College, and operating
his own bistro. The protagonist of this hilarious novel, Osborne’s
first, is Frank, a terminally ill divorcee whose estranged son is
getting married. When the dimwitted bride-to-be doesn’t measure up to
Frank’s expectations, he decides to kill her. In fact, he thinks he
may already have done just that—accidentally—when greasy Ray drops
by. As the story unfolds, Ray turns out to be a trustworthy friend,
albeit an odd one. Predictably, Frank’s ex-wife puts in an unwelcome
appearance. Rottweilers and other pooches also have a role to play in
this wonderfully hectic tale.
