Review

When Nick Slovak, a Canadian immigration officer, learns that his
partner was killed during the arrest of a boatload of illegal
immigrants, he begins a relentless pursuit of his partner’s killer who
escaped on the night of the raid. Working closely with friends in the
police and RCMP, he uncovers a host of crimes and political corruption.

Things go from bad to worse when the case gives Nick little choice but
to once again start seeing Grace Wang-Weinstein. Grace, an ambitious
immigration judge, visits the home of one her colleagues to discuss what
will likely be the biggest case of her career. Instead of co-chairing
the case with her colleague, she finds herself a suspect in his murder.
Not only must she try to bring down a fair decision in the case, but she
must stay alive long enough to deliver it.

Mary Moylum, an arbitrator in private practice who served as an
adjudicator on the Immigration and Refugee Board, skilfully weaves
together multiple narratives in this tension-filled and very Canadian
story of political corruption and organized crime. Recommended for
mystery fans and/or those with an interest in modern China, the
Canadian-Chinese community, or Chinese organized crime.
