Review

Erika de Vasconcelos is an established Canadian writer whose first
novel, My Darling Dead Ones, put her on the list of internationally
acclaimed fiction writers. Between the Stillness and the Grove takes us
back in time as far as 1915, into the genocidal upheavals of Armenia,
Azerbaijan, and Turkey, and the unspeakable human sufferings and
tragedies that occurred, right through glasnost and the independence
struggle of Armenia. Dzovig and Vecihe, two courageous and determined
women, brought together by their love and grief for Tomas, Vecihe’s
son who committed suicide, independently decide to leave Armenia. Dzovig
sells her body for an airplane ticket, Vecihe leaves her husband of 36
years, and both eventually emerge in the West, reuniting in Toronto.
Based on thorough research, this well-written story of mystery and
suspense explores memories common to many refugees now living in the
“luxury” of Western civilization. Many quotes from one of
Portugal’s great writers and poets, Fernando Pessoa, enhance the book.
