Review

Northern Links touches on many of the highlights of Canadian golf, both
past and present. The author devotes considerable space to such players
as George Knudson, Marlene Stewart Striet, Bill Hardwick, and Doug Robb,
as well as to some of Canada’s greatest golf course architects
(Stanley Thompson, Doug Carrich, Les Furber). He also describes the
accomplishments of some of our lesser lights, such as Steve Johnston,
who has 47 aces, and Rob McDannold, who runs the country’s premier
caddy program.

The reader is introduced to a number of events and facilities,
including the Yellowknife Golf Club Midnight Classic (Midnight Madness),
the Banff Springs Golf Course (Banff Springs Eternal), Oakville’s Golf
Dome, British Columbia’s Greywolf Golf Course, and our East Coast golf
destinations (Cape Breton and Prince Edward Island). One of the book’s
recurring themes is the need for golf to exist in harmony with nature;
the chapter on the Banff Springs Golf Course is a tribute to the work
Stanley Thompson put into building a course that would be in keeping
with its natural setting.

Northern Links invites readers to explore Canadian golfing heritage and
to reflect on the game of golf and its place in our lives.
