Review
In this very clever and very funny “mockumentary,” Kevin Sylvester
imagines what might have happened had Russia won the 1972 Summit Series
instead of Canada. The text—presented as an underground radio program
that was never aired—covers the events following the catastrophic
defeat on Sept. 28, 1972. The fallout was immediate: crowds gathered at
the Toronto Airport not to welcome home the Canadian team but to
encourage them to jump from the moving plane; Hockey Night in Canada was
cancelled when all the sponsors pulled out, and the National Hockey
League folded; former players tried their hand at alternate careers such
as lion taming; a young sports phenomenon from Brantford,
Ontario—Wayne Gretzky—became a curling superstar; and finally, some
of the losing players were invited to join a new Russian league and
compete for the Stanislav Cup. The pace of this book is so fast that the
humor never has a chance to flag.
