Review

According Charles Wilkins, many of us “have drifted from our detailed
and long-standing links with the earth.” In this collection of tales,
he introduces us to exceptional Canadians—sailors, mountain climbers,
environmentalists, stargazers, and ecologists—who have managed to hold
on, with great passion, to their natural habitat. The book is divided
into three parts. Part 1 deals with the author’s experience sailing
the Great Lakes on a freighter called the M.V. Paterson. In Part 2,
Wilkins describes his adventures in the wilderness of Canada. Part 3
combines general thoughts and commentary on the author’s sailing
experiences. Although the three sections don’t quite mesh, Wilkins
succeeds in taking the reader deep into “the wild heart of Canada.”
