Review

Stephen Hume loves Western Canada, and who can blame him? In this
collection of 27 essays, the Vancouver Sun columnist, teacher, and
award-winning author of numerous books of poetry, essays, and natural
history takes us on fascinating journey through the wild and urban areas
of Western Canada. Hume takes us aboard misty midnight ferries in search
of the perfect cup of coffee and north to Fort Simpson and its frosty
winter world. He stops at quaint places to narrate local history,
culture, and folklore. And he recounts the stories of quirky characters,
such as the gold prospector who spent his life searching for the mother
lode in the Nahanni Valley in the Northwest Territories. The one thing
missing from this inspiring book is a collection of maps. Recommended
for armchair travelers and perhaps as background reading before a visit
the region.
