This basic reference tool was first published in 1910 in London,
England. Canadian copyright was acquired in 1932. From 1936 to 1975, the
project was under the direction of A.L. Tunnell and was usually
published triennially. It began to be published by the University of
Toronto Press in 1978, and from 1980 on was published annually.
Canadian Who’s Who 1999 includes biographies of people defined as
being of current national interest for reference or inquiry. Individuals
are chosen on the basis of merit alone, the positions they hold in
Canadian society, or the contribution they have made to life in Canada.
Coverage runs to some 5000 individuals. The detailed format includes
date and place of birth, education, family details, career information,
memberships, creative works, and honors and awards, together with full
addresses.
The editors aim to cover “every area of human activity,” including
business, academia, politics, sports, and the arts and sciences. The
current editor is Elizabeth Lumley.
Canadians are often accused of not recognizing their own achievers
until other nations, especially the United States, have done so.
Canadian Who’s Who 1999 should be in high-school and community
libraries, as well as university collections.
