Review

This revised guide thoroughly and systematically leads a prospective
student through the undergraduate experience. Although it has
substantial material that any student could use, the book’s primary
target is the person considering university for the first time; and so
it begins with a discussion of what the institution is about, and
whether it is the right place for the reader. It then moves to the
application process, reviewing the categories (regular, mature, etc.),
the stages of institutional consideration, and even what to do if
rejected. Also considered is finance—the costs involved and the
various sources of assistance.

Attention is paid to choosing the right university for the individual
student (an important consideration for any student facing a
fundamentally different kind of educational experience); information on
the nature of university life (academic, bureaucratic, social, and
extracurricular) is offered; and tips are given on study skills, getting
started with note-taking, reading practices, and exams. In all of this,
special consideration is given to the situation faced by international
students.

One-page profiles are presented for all anglophone Canadian
universities (francophone universities are just listed, as are the
various colleges affiliated with the public universities). These are
accompanied by provincial and campus maps, and include information on
enrolment, tuition, residence, degrees and programs, co-op eduction
opportunities, library and other facilities, and something about the
setting.

With university education becoming the destination of an
ever-increasing proportion of the population, many of whom have no ready
source of advice, this publication provides a welcome service.
