Review

Dr. Rainham presents a clear, straightforward set of guidelines for
dealing with stress during the teen years. This book for high-school and
university students is an outgrowth of his presentations and workshops
on various campuses. His prescriptions would fit anyone experiencing the
stress of contemporary life, and it is interesting how many of them
apply unchanged to adult living. In fact the volume is a sort of
stripped-down maintenance manual for the care of the human psyche that
also covers the body, feelings, and interpersonal relations. Stress may
be the motivator for getting people to attend to themselves and to read
this book, but the scope is more than merely stress management. Students
who follow the author’s suggestions would effectively prevent the
negative effects of stressors in their lives and would learn to use
their will, imagery, and intent to benefit from their emotional
responses to events. Since so much of our formal schooling for teens is
focused on dealing with the “out there,” it is good to have a
resource designed to help them deal with their inner reality.
