Review

Set in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Pray for Us Sinners is a tale of
intrigue, double-dealing, and raw emotion.

Marcus Richardson, an explosives expert with the British Army, is on a
tour of duty in Belfast. Near-death from a car bomb set by the Provos
provides an excuse for Richardson to be placed undercover to expose the
top IRA men, creating a storyline that introduces people from all sides
of the struggle. There is the young soldier from Glasgow with only two
more days to serve in Belfast; Davy, who is loyal to the romantic cause
of Irish reunification; Brendan, the hard-nosed Provo information
officer with nothing on his mind except power and revenge at any cost;
Siobhan, who has managed to make a life for herself in Toronto and has
divorced herself from the situation at home; and Major Smith, who needs
a victory in Northern Ireland to reclaim his lost prestige in the
British military service. Each person exhibits an extremely passionate
loyalty to his or her beliefs. The struggle in Northern Ireland, Taylor
shows, has never been a clear-cut story of good versus evil; each side
has a certain degree of “right.”

Taylor’s style is simple and straightforward. The historical facts
are accurate and the honest depiction of the various characters makes
this a wonderful introduction to a turbulent time in the Irish struggle
for freedom and peace. Taylor was born in Bangor County Down, Northern
Ireland, and immigrated to Canada in 1969. Pray for Us Sinners is his
second book.
