Review

In this book, compiled by Erica Ehm of “MuchMusic” fame, 10 young
women share their outlooks on careers, politics, education,
relationships, and feminism. The subjects of Ehm’s interviews are
Sarah McLachlan, an internationally successful musicmaker; Susan
Aglukark, a musician and promoter of Inuit culture; Nathalie Karvonen,
founder of the Toronto Wildlife Centre; Severn Cullis-Suzuki, author,
activist, and founder of the Environmental Children’s Organization;
Ann Duggen, a humanitarian doctor working in Azerbaijan; Kim Reid, a
Canadian Air Force fighter pilot; Jennifer Fournier, first soloist with
the National Ballet of Canada; Kingi Carpenter, fashion designer of
funky clothes; Alison Reid, stunt woman; and Sarah Polley, star of the
hit TV series “Road to Avonlea.”

What these women have in common is a strong desire to achieve and a
willingness to work hard to realize their goals. Ehm’s message is that
computers, the Internet, e-mail, and modems have exposed young people to
more ideas than their parents were exposed to, and that this can lead to
bigger dreams. Standards are higher, but there are more opportunities
for the ambitious. This well-organized and user-friendly book confirms
that there are still inspirational stories to be told.
