Review

This excellent pictorial history of Sudbury is not only artistically
interesting, but also historically accurate and eminently readable.
Thomas, a Sudburian since the 1960s, and Pearsall, a life-long resident,
indicate their sensitivity for the area and its past with their careful
choosing and arranging of the photographs. The first picture in the book
features Sudbury’s main street in 1894; another, taken about the same
time, depicts the volunteer fire department. Since Sudbury did not exist
prior to 1883, the number of large buildings and the equipment shown in
these two pictures are impressive.

The book contains 12 short chapters, a preface, and a bibliography.
Chapter themes include Sudbury’s first year, the prosperity following
World War I, and Sudbury during the roaring ’20s. Though not a
scholarly work, this delightful book will interest both local historians
and general readers.
