Review

In her sixth novel, Barfoot (author of the internationally acclaimed
Dancing in the Dark and Plain Jane) brings to life two women in a way
that is sometimes funny, sometimes moving, but always stimulating.
Claudia, married for nearly 50 years, is the wife of an unfaithful
husband; Charlotte, who never married, is the mistress of married men.
As they try to deal with the changes and challenges of old age, the
lifelong friends reflect on their very different lives and the choices
and compromises they made that altered the directions of those lives.

The mood of the book is ultimately very positive as Charlotte and
Claudia face old age together. As in her earlier books, Barfoot writes
about women’s lives with insight, compassion, and wit.
