Review

100 Great Moments in Hockey should satisfy both the serious student and
the casual observer of hockey. Divided into four sections, each
featuring 25 thoughtfully selected events, this coffee-table book of
photojournalism and hockey memorabilia is an excellent addition to a
sports fan’s library.

Section 1 (“Heroes Are Not Ordinary Men”) highlights memorable
feats of established stars like Howe, Hull, LaFleur, and Gretzky as well
as lesser-knowns Braun, Barilko, and O’Rea, whose stars shone briefly.
Section 2 (“Big Goals, Great Saves, Streaks and Longshots”) features
such items as the 1905 challenge by the Dawson City Nuggets for the
Stanley Cup and Mike Garner’s 15 consecutive 30-goal seasons. Section
3 (“Feuds, Tragedies, Firsts and Flukes) focuses on the first NHL
all-star game in 1934, the Montreal “Richard” riot of 1955, and the
infamous Howe-Fontinato fight of 1959. The last section (“Debuts,
Galas and Farewells”) covers Foster Hewitt’s first radio broadcast,
Boston’s Kraut line, and Edmonton’s trade of Gretzky.

Each of the 100 selections has a two-page layout complete with
well-chosen, full-page photographs and capsule commentary on the events.
This excellent book recommended for all public-library hockey
collections.
