Review

Home winemaking is becoming increasingly popular in Canada and England,
where high taxes on wines have led to high prices. Whittaker’s
Winemaking Made Easy is a good resource for first-time winemakers. It
covers all the basics in fewer than 60 pages, and if beginners just
follow the recipes, remember to sterilize all the equipment, and avoid
experimenting (at least initially), nothing should go wrong. In addition
to red and white wines, the book also covers rice wine, rhubarb wine,
Madeira and sherry, and fruit wines. Though some of the tricks of the
trade are missing (such as goosing up the extract by adding more
concentrate), a short but extremely useful chapter on troubleshooting is
included.
