Review

As time goes by, there is less and less general awareness of the
significance of various military medals and decorations. On the other
hand, there is a growing number of keen collectors and students of these
medals. This catalogue is likely to find an appreciative readership
among these select audiences.

“Medal buffs” will enjoy how each award is presented in a close-up
photograph and described succinctly (with each description including an
explanation of its origin, the achievement it honors, related
statistics, and historical background). Though the title emphasizes
Canada’s decorations, and the book contains many new Canadian awards
introduced since 1985, it also provides a detailed overview of all
British medals and awards (it was only during the past 25 years or so
that our country devised orders and decorations different from those of
Britain).

The fashion for provincial governments to introduce their own honors is
clearly explained, as is the significance of medal ribbons. The
catalogue features a full-color chart illustrating the proper sequence
for the wearing of Canadian orders and decorations, and provides a list
of current prices for medals to Canadian recipients as well as for
miniatures and copies.
