Review

The Greek poet, critic, and diarist George Seferis (1901-71) was awarded
the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1963. His lifetime career in the Greek
Government Diplomatic Service was capped when he served as Ambassador to
Britain from 1957 to 1962. He corresponded freely with many eminent
literary figures in the English-speaking world, variously influencing
and being influenced by them. Seferis finds a worthy Boswell in Thaniel,
who died just before completing the first draft. Edited by G. Phinney,
this book is a remarkable tribute to Thaniel’s painstaking research,
scrupulous footnotes, and comprehensive documentation. The only omission
is an index, which would have helped the nonspecialist reader.
