Review

The biography of this popular Canadian artist is interesting for what
you do and don’t get. What you get is an interpretation of lang’s
life and achievements, an insight into the Canadian and American popular
music scene, and a sense of the hard work it takes to be a successful,
internationally recognized performer. Of particular interest is the
artistic confrontation between lang and the country-music taste-makers
in Nashville, Tennessee.

What you don’t get is k.d. lang herself. Starr talked to many people
who have known, worked with, or interviewed the singer, but apparently
Starr has not had the same privilege—hence the interpretation of
lang’s career and achievements.

Starr’s writing style is wide-ranging making the author seem more a
fan than an observer.

The book is complemented by a useful index and discography.
