Review

This expanded edition of the original 1984 publication contains new
chapters on the pre– and early post–World War II period in Germany.

Before World War II, the author’s affluent family, which had German
roots dating back many centuries, belonged to Berlin society; but with
the rise of the Nazis, all Jewish Germans became pariahs in their
homeland. Progeny of Light chronicles the author’s recollections of
these times. In her account, Brewster describes her brief involvement in
the Resistance movement, the horrors of imprisonment at Auschwitz, and
her post-WW II work as a translator for the American Army and the
British Control Commission in Germany. One of her most poignant
recollections is the description of her father, who did not believe,
almost to the very end, what would happen to his family. In his
illusion, he was not alone. This vivid, well-written memoir deserves to
be widely read.
