Review

In this investor’s guide, Chevreau analyzes market fluctuations in
1994; profiles 14 top Canadian fund managers; dabbles in prophecy (in a
section wittily called “Reading the Entrails”); and analyzes the 500
most popular funds sold in Canada (as measured by asset size)—these
are not ranked.

The interviews with fund managers make a useful feature, as a fund’s
success depends on its manager(s). The short, punchy profiles are the
best part of this fairly comprehensive book.

In the foreword, Diane Francis concludes that a novice ignorant of the
kind of information in this guide will be “guaranteed failure,” a
strong warning given the field’s complexity and volatility. Chevreau,
currently the mutual funds reporter for The Financial Post, knows his
subject.
